Visaaranai (Interrogation) 2015 Movie Review

This Interrogation is Incredible !

This chilling social drama opens our eyes to the horrors around us.

Producer : Dhanush
Director : Vetri Maran
Available on Netflix.
Visaaranai (Interrogation), as the name suggests is an Interrogation drama that is brutal and real. The brutality in the film is beyond the visceral violence on screen, it is more in the characters or the unquestionably powerful body, The Police. This is, by no means a sympathy evoking commercially viable film that shows the cops in bad light to draw sympathy for the characters affected by them.

This movie deals in a larger context and having a realistic setup never lets the characterization or narrative go over the top. The interrogation scenes are shot with such authenticity that every blow of the stick hurts and every agonized scream pierces the soul.

What starts as a case of false allegation for a theft, spirals into a life changing night for the people involved. This is a tale of exploitation and coincidence. The plot is complex and one end of an episode leads to the start of another and it all climaxes shockingly enough to leave you wondering as to who exactly was to be blamed for what ensued. The film is about an issue that most are unaware of. It deals with the atrocities carried out on the Tamil Immigrants who come to Andhra in search of a better life and sleep in public parks to save the rent of a room. We get to see a story of 4 such immigrants and how their lives are entangled into a situation which only gets worse as the film goes on. They are often in the wrong place at the wrong time and how that affects their lives, is a compelling story to watch.

The director seems to possess a special kind of talent to instill suspense into the screenplay with simplistic camera work and minimal music. The performances of course are spotless, barring a few weirdly dubbed dialogue.

Visaaranai is a suspense thriller with an added sense of social relevance and an ode to a true story that is both depressing and inspiring!

PS: Visaaranai was India’s official entry to Oscars in 2015
